Ealing Council is laying on a family bike ride, led by two qualified cycling instructors, this coming Sunday, 20th September. It's leaving from Walpole Park at 11am and will head towards the canal through Elthorne Park, through Churchfields Recreation Ground by Ealing Hospital and on to Pear Tree Park. There will be a number of stalls linked to Ealing Climate Week and a "Dr Bike" on hand so your machine can get tickled up if need be. You'll have time to explore and have refreshments before the ride returns to Walpole Park.

Older news is that a number of Ealing Cycling Campaign members rode to Amsterdam in August. The ride has become an annual event in memory of David Eales, an active and valuable member of ECC until his untimely death ten years ago. Some rode from London to Dover before catching the ferry to Dunkerque, while three others (busy on the day of departure) took the train to Dover. All rode 450 km from Dunkerque to Amsterdam over the following days, experiencing just what well-designed cycle paths and streets can be like.
As you can see from the photograph above the Dutch take their bicycles, well, not seriously at all. They just use them to get about. Everywhere. In ordinary clothes. Carrying shopping or small children. No fuss, no noise, no drama. What's not to like?
We need to hold an AGM every year to elect the committee members who keep things running smoothly, and give at least one month's notice of said meeting. So here it is; the AGM of Ealing Cycling Campaign will be held on Wednesday November 4th as part of our regular monthly get-together in the library of Questors Theatre. All are welcome (though to vote you must be a paid-up member of London Cycling Campaign). We meet at 7pm and will discuss cycling infrastructure and planned road modifications to begin with, then start the AGM business about 815pm to allow those with awkward working hours and commutes to arrive. After that we'll indulge in the usual social chat, perhaps adjourning to the bar.
