Ride Reports

Wimbledon Common
.

December 2009

Prospects didn’t look good with heavy rain forecast at the start of the week
and a serious downpour at about quarter to nine on Sunday. However 18 riders
turned up, perhaps encouraged by a BBC forcast for a dry sunny afternoon.

The ride to Wimbledon common is a classic off road route taking in some of
west London’s best green spaces with hills, views and scenery. Much rain
earlier in the week caused the river path section onwards from Barnes to be
very muddy. Some riders had had enough of the mud by Hammersmith Bridge and
opted for a road route to meet up with the ride again at the Wetlands
centre.

The promised sunshine arrived and mud free now, we cheerfully made
out way to the popular cafe at the windmill on the common. Robin, our ride
leader, managed to break his chain in a (failed) attempt to ride over the
footbridge at Robin Hood roundabout and was only saved from a very long walk
home by Tim with a chain tool and its skillful use. With perhaps enough mud
for one day, we opted to take the route north of the river through Syon Park
from Richmond rather than the river path. But, the urge for off road was
undiminished and we followed the canal from Brentford back to Ealing to
finish at about 4pm.

Many thanks to Martin for acting as a backstop.
