The Thames Tow Path, Grand Union and a bonfire

16 us of gathered for a trip around the waterways of the borough – led by our local canal volunteer Brian. Although cold and windy there was a good turn out and we were soon heading south towards the Thames, going through Brentford and through some back streets we don’t normally take. Disaster struck when a chain got stuck in the front chain rings of the lead bike, but the combined skills of several of the riders eventually cured the problem.

We eventually joined the river path and headed west crossing the river at Chiswick Bridge before heading along the south bank towards Richmond. I think many of us had forgotten what the Thames path is like and how pleasant it is – passing Kew, Syon House and Richmond itself. Lunch was in the White Cross pub for a much needed refuelling.

After lunch we headed out of Richmond through Isleworth and into Syon House before heading up the canal for the grand finale. Brian is the local canal volunteer and had previously asked if the ride could spare time to burn some brush wood that had been drying out. We didn’t need to be asked twice as everyone grabbed handfuls of cut wood to burn to on the ever growing bonfire. Brian produced mulled wine and mince pies and we cheerfully warmed ourselves by the bonfire for a recap of the day.

A delightful end to a very pleasant ride.
