West London Greenfest 2007

Ready to ride

A large group of 22 joined the ride to the West London Greenfest. A great mix of ages, abilities and background.

The location of the fair proved a challenge given how close it is in Hammersmith so we took the long way round, heading down the back streets of South Ealing and into Brentford before entering Syon Park and Isleworth.

The group kept good speed and more or less stayed as a whole, we are getting better at this but the occasional traffic light and junction can still break the group a little.

Into Richmond town and then up the hill past the Roebuck , pausing for riders to catch up and admire the view. We entered the park well ahead of time and a quick vote chose to stop for an early break for tea, ice cream and a chat with the new faces. Still ahead of time I pondered a circuit of the park, but the voice of reason pointed out it’s 7 miles so we made our way to Roehampton Gate and then out of the park on a lovely long stretch of cycle lane before turning east at Barnes and onto the Thames path.

Across Putney Bridge and into Bishop’s Park and then into Fulham and Hammersmith itself finding some even quieter roads than expected. We entered the festival just after 1.00pm and discovered an array of the usual food stalls, music and activities. The Cyclist Trust were present with their selection of weird and wonderful bikes – pictures of people who should know better below.

We agreed a meet-up time and split up, although it’s a not huge and we soon re-joined to enjoy lunch together and the sunshine. We met John Griffiths who organises the festival and Des Kay who some of you may know from Critical Mass.

Some people elected to leave early which worked well as they told us ahead of time so we didn’t waste time looking for missing souls at the end.

We turned West and headed home, taking the usual quiet back streets of Strand on the Green and then hit Kew Bridge before retracing our steps into Ealing

22 miles – thanks for David for back stopping.
