Annual General Meeting

Don't miss out. This Wednesday, 1st of October, we're holding our Annual General Meeting. It's at our regular venue: downstairs at Cafe Grove, The Grove W5 5LL. The meeting starts at 7.30 pm, and normally ends around 9pm. The cafe serves food, beer, wine, coffee, and excellent cheesecake, and you are welcome to eat and drink during the meeting. We will be electing the committee, and all members of London Cycling Campaign living in Ealing are entitled to vote. We welcome new members and non-members, so if you haven't been before, come along and find out what we do.

Lorry sensor could save lives

A safety system attached to an Ealing Council lorry has detected and helped prevent 15 potentially fatal collisions.  The Cycle Safety Shield can detect the presence of pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists, but ignores false alarms from railings, lampposts and other street furniture. In Ealing Council's six month trial, which ended in June, the system detected over 40,000 pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. On 15 occasions, they were considered close enough to be in danger, and the system's alarm warned the driver, who was able to brake and avoid a collision. Most alerts came from cyclists on the left side of the lorry as it travelled straight ahead or turned left. On average, it was travelling at 13.6mph at the time of these alarms. They system apparently produced a 20% improvement in driver behaviour, due to less aggressive acceleration and braking - with the added bonus of a reported £1000 per year saving in fuel.
TfL is now trialling the equipment on two buses, and the City of London Corporation will test it on its rubbish trucks.
Bassam Mahfouz, Ealing council's cabinet member for transport,  said: "We are in discussions with TfL and if their own independent results support these so far, we are keen to look at further roll-out of this system across our fleet."

Cycle Parking

Image from Cyclehoop

Ealing Council have expressed an interest in placing a number of Bikehangars - covered cycle stands - throughout the borough, but they want to find out where they are needed. They are interested in hearing about locations on streets or on private or commercial land. Bikehangars are likely to be installed where demand is greatest and your response will help identify possible locations. If interested please fill in the form here. Or you can email Ealing Council on cycling@ealing.gov.uk. This is also the address to contact the council if you have any other ideas for cycle improvements in Ealing - whether it's a location for a cycle stand, opening up a one-way street to two-way cycle flow, or installing a dedicated cycle lane the transport department wants to hear from you.

Brentford Festival

They lie. The Festival is not actually in Brentford. When it was priced out of Hounslow, it moved to Ealing and is now held in Blondin Park in Northfields. It’s a fun event – last year you could try slacklining – so of course we’ll have a stall. Dr. Bike will also be on hand, so bring your bicycle to get it checked over.  When: Sunday 7th September from 12noon to 6pm.
